Global Theater of the Girls
Global Theater of the Girls an international educational outreach program initiated by Theater Between and Educate Girls Globally (EGG) that seeks to empower young women from underprivileged communities around the world through the medium of performance. When introduced early in a young woman’s education, the methods and processes of performance creation can take transformative roots in her life, giving her the tools to discover and deepen her sense of self-worth, strengthen her self-determination, develop her creativity and leadership skills, and hone her ability to connect with others in order to meaningfully participate in the co-creation of her world. Through engaging in such an embodied, creative practice, young women learn to regard reality as malleable and responsive to imagination and intent, rather than simply given by tradition and fate.

India
June 2017 Theater Between traveled to the province of Uttarakhand, India, to conduct an performance workshop in the city of Rudrapur. The workshop introduced young women to the basics of theater training, during which they begun to learn how to express themselves through the medium of performance, while developing their own original material for the stage. We are currently preparing a return to India to create a permanent program in the Himalayan foothills. |

Ghana and Cameroon
In August 2017, Theater Between visited Ghana and Cameroon to investigate the potential for performance collaboration with local communities. In Accra, Ghana, we connected with Research and Counseling Foundation for African Migrants (RECFAM) who helped us bring a performance workshop to young girls in Hillview Montessori School in Burma Camp. During the workshop, the students created an improvised movement and spoken word piece exploring issues of power and gender.
Our journey continued onward to Cameroon and the Kingdom of Nso located in the North of the country. There we experienced the tremendous vitality of the performative spirit endemic to this region, a part and parcel of communal life. At present, we are exploring the potential for artistic collaboration with Nso communities. |
